Puccinia bassiae Samuels

Description
Uredinia on both leaf surfaces, subepidermal, erumpent, round or ellipsoidal, bordered by torn epidermis, 0.5‒1.0 mm, yellow to yellowish brown.

Urediniospores subglobose or broadly ellipsoidal, yellowish brown, 28‒36 × 20‒28 µm; wall 2.0‒3.5 µm thick, echinulate spines 1.0‒1.5 µm high, 2.0‒3.0 µm apart, with 5‒8 scattered germ pores.

Telia on both leaf surfaces and stems, often formed in uredinia, subepidermal, erumpent, dome-shaped, round or broadly ellipsoidal, 0.5‒1.0 mm, sometimes longer when confluent, brown to black.

Teliospores cylindrical or ellipsoidal, slightly constricted at the septum, apex rounded or slightly umbonate, 2 celled, reddish brown, 32‒44 × 20‒27 µm; wall 2‒3 µm thick at sides, 4‒7 µm thick at apex, smooth, pedicel persistent, up to 70 µm long, 6‒9 µm wide at base, subhyaline to pale brown.

Comments
The rust species on Amaranthaceae have yet to be resolved by either morphology, phylogeny or biology (host range). In Australia, five species of Puccinia have been reported from species of Arthrocnemum, Bassia, Dissocarpus, Kochia, Maireana, Sclerolaena and Threlkedia. These species are P. arthrocnemi (Hansford 1954), P. bassiae (Samuel 1924), P. dielsiana (Hennings 1901), P. kochiae (Massee 1893) and P. sclerolaenae (Massee 1910). Of these we consider that the rust on Sclerolaena densiflora is morphologically most similar to P. bassiae. However Samuels (1924) did not specify a holotype for P. bassiae, listing five different specimens of Bassia, some that have been transferred to other genera of Amaranthaceae. The future stability of this taxon requires that a lectotype is chosen from these syntypes.
