Puccinia cannae Henn.

Description
Uredinia on leaves, amphigenous, mostly abaxial, subepidermal, erumpent, round or linear, up to 0.5 mm long, scattered, yellow to yellowish brown.

Urediniospores subglobose, ellipsoidal, obovoid or pyriform, subhyaline to pale yellow, 22‒41 × 18‒24 µm; wall 1.5‒2.5 µm thick, coarsely and sparsely echinulate with conical spines up to 2 µm long.

Telia on leaves, abaxial, subepidermal, often surrounding uredinia, covered by the epidermis, individually round up to 200 µm diam. or aggregated in black polygonal vein-bordered patches up to 1 mm long, black.

Teliospores cylindrical or clavate, apex rounded, pale brown, 35‒70 × 14‒21 µm; wall 1.0‒1.5 µm thick, sometimes thickened up to 6 µm at apex, smooth, 2-celled, occasionally slightly constricted at septum cells, pedicel persistent, up to 15 µm, subhyaline.

Comments
Two species of Puccinia are described on Canna, P. cannae from Brazil (Hennings 1902) and P. cannacearum from India (Bagyanarayana and Ramesh 1999). We consider that P. cannacearum is a synonym of P. cannae based on the type descriptions of both taxa. The rust on Canna indica is often referred to as P. thaliae (Henen et al. 2005), which was described from Thalia dealbata in Marantaceae (Dietel 1899), a family sister to Cannaceae in the Zingiberales (Stevens 2012). We accept P. cannae as the rust on Canna, as it is the earliest name described from a host in Cannaceae. Specimens of Puccinia cannae were collected in Australia as early as 1995.
