Comments
Puccinia haemodori was first described on Anigozanthos sp. from near Perth, Western Australia (Hennings 1901) and has been present in eastern Australia since at least 1986 (Liddell and Lawson 1986). This rust fungus causes a serious disease of cultivated kangaroo paws (Anigozanthos and Macropidia spp.) in Western Australia (Verhoogt and Sivasithamparam 1985). Puccinia haemodori was found to be closely related to some Western Australian rust fungi on Goodeniaceae, Stylidiaceae and Asteraceae in a systematic analysis (Hyde et al. 2014). These rusts may be the result of sympatric speciation after host jumps in a shared environment (McTaggart et al. 2014).
