Puccinia lagenophorae Cooke

Description
Aecia amphigenous, in groups, yellow to orange, peridium present.

Aeciospores subglobose or ellipsoidal, yellow to orange, 13‒18 × 9‒14 µm; wall 0.5 µm thick, finely and densely echinulate.

Telia on both leaf surfaces or stems, subepidermal, erumpent, dome-shaped, scattered or in groups, 0.5‒1 mm diam., black.

Teliospores clavate, apex rounded or truncate, 2 celled, upper cell darker and thicker walled than the lower cell, reddish brown, 50‒65 × 17‒27 µm; wall 1.5‒2.5 µm thick at sides, 6‒10 µm thick at apex, smooth, pedicel persistent, pale reddish brown, up to 48 µm long, 5‒10 µm wide at base.

Mesospores oval, ellipsoidal or slightly irregular, reddish-brown, 30‒50 × 17‒22 µm.

Comments
Puccinia lagenophorae is an autoecious, demicyclic (forms aeicia and telia) rust described from Australia (Cooke 1884). Inoculation experiments (Wilson et al. 1965) and systematic studies (Scholler et al. 2011) showed that P. lagenophorae had a wide host range of about 110 species in at least 16 genera of the Asteraceae. Over ten species of rust fungi described from different genera of Asteraceae in Australia were considered conspecific with P. lagenophorae (Scholler et al. 2011; Wilson et al. 1965). Some Australian specimens of rust on the weed Senecio madagascariensis, which originates from South Africa (Sindel et al. 1998), differ from P. lagenophorae in morphology of teliospores. These rust specimens warrant further examination as Morin et al. (2009) suggested that there was evidence of hybridisation between P. lagenophorae and another unknown rust fungus, on S. madagascariensis in South Africa.
