Uromyces viciae-fabae (Pers.) J. Schröt.

Description
Uredinia on stems and lower leaf surface, subepidermal, erumpent, round to ellipsoidal, confluent, up to 0.5 mm, reddish brown, peridium present.

Urediniospores globose, subglobose or obovoid, apex obtuse, yellowish brown, 22‒25 × 20‒23 µm; wall 1.5‒2.5 µm thick, finely echinulate, with 2-4 germ pores, mostly equatorial or occasionally superequatorial.

Telia on stems, subepidermal, erumpent, linear or dome-shaped, reddish brown to black, peridium present.

Teliospores subglobose or ellipsoidal, apex rounded or umbonate, reddish brown, 29‒34 × 17‒25 µm; wall 1.5‒3 µm thick at sides, 6-9 µm thick at apex, smooth, pedicel persistent, up to 40 µm.

Uromyces viciae-fabae is a common rust on faba bean (Vicia faba) and vetch (V. sativa) in Australia (Lindbeck 2009). Around the world strains of U. viciae-fabae have been reported from Cicer arietinum (chickpea), Lathyrus spp., Lens spp., Pisum sativum (pea), and Rumex angustifolia (Parry and Freeman 2001, Barilli et al. 2011). The lentil and  pea strains of U. viciae-fabae have not been reported from Australia.
