Sori in ovules, filling the swollen capsules with an initially agglutinated, later powdery purplish brown spore mass. Infection systemic.

Spores globose, subglobose, broadly ellipsoidal or ovoid, 10.5–13.0 (–14) × 10.5–12.5 µm, pale yellowish brown with a violet tint; wall 1.5–2.5 µm thick, finely reticulate, 5–8 meshes per spore diameter; muri 0.7–1.0 (–1.5) µm high, in median view appearing as acute projections, in SEM the interspaces are verruculose or occasionally with 1 or 2 protuberances.

Australian and New Zealand specimens have taller muri (more than 1.0 µm high) than the type specimen from Norway, which has muri 0.7–1.0 µm.
